Ignorance avidya = not-knowing = conviction in our beliefs, a major belief being in a reality that is not Brahman or consciousness. Certain knowledge of Brahman is not an intellectual belief but a realisation. All this is Brahman.Self-enquiry needs to be continually practised. Apply it to spiritual notions particularly as these can often reinforce avidya. Be cautious with traditional spiritual practices.Self-knowledge has nothing to do with the senses and the mind. Truth can be continually realised in whatever circumstances. The gods are described as established in self-knowledge. Previously they were described as part of ignorance. Traditionally it is difficult for a god to become enlightened. They have no incentive towards dispassion. Some human beings are like this. For them, life is fine and there is no need to look more deeply into things.Rama asks about the nature of self-knowledge. Everything is Brahman. Brahman also includes all our notions. Brahman apprehends Brahman. This is what gives rise to the world-appearance and also what allows self-realisation.
