Even the gods find it impossible to deal with the consuming fire of craving. Are all calamities the result of craving? Eg earthquakes? The craving to be right, to be in moral authority as displayed by some people of religious belief. Some beliefs can be very unpleasant. If earthquakes happen by the will of God then did the victims somehow deserve this calamity? It's difficult not to believe this if you believe in God. Similarly with the belief that the circumstances of one's birth are due to past karma. Is there any virtue to such beliefs or is the net result negative?Craving -- such as the craving to be right - diminishes us. See Gollum in the Lord of the Rings as an illustrative embodiment of craving. When craving diminishes we become better human beings.Craving should be "renounced from a great distance". When caught up in it there's little that can be done. Don't go there in the first place!Focus on that which gives us a better sense of ourselves.Craving is what fuels all our notions of the world. It creates a vortex of notions that awareness gets sucked into. Our very idea of the world is driven by craving.Text:http://www.venkatesaya.com/241_vasistha01/index.vasistha01.php?m=8&d=7
