This is a short clip from the 14-18 year old Hunter Under Saddle class at the State 4-H Horse Show in July 2008.My sister is the one on the chestnut gelding ("Dribbles," my mom's 1996 AQHA gelding) who is between the horse going nuts and the judge. The girl on the tall horse that bolted/bucked shows in the same open show association as I do. I don't know her that well, but I show against her mother. She is younger (about 14 or 15) and shows against my 15 year old sister. She's not a bad rider, but she normally rides an older, dead-broke all-around horse. Her mom recently acquired this horse, a 7 year old, very green AQHA Appendix gelding. She wanted to use him for all-around and jumping. Her mom had shown him all summer and while he was definitely green, he never acted stupid. The girl showed him for the first time at the District 4-H show and didn't have a very good experience (listen to the commentary and you will hear me say "uh-oh" when the horse first started acting up because I knew what was going to happen), but she tried again at State--and it was a disaster, as you can see. Part of the problem was that she was half terrified of the horse after her first bad experience and she didn't want to ride it in the first place, so she was tense and made the horse tense. The first incident here was a small buck/jump in the first corner you see (the tall, dark horse on the rail). Watch them continue down the rail and you'll see that he's changed leads and is fighting her. When they neared the judge, they got into a horse traffic jam (and no, it's not proper to circle in front of the judge to make more room, as stupid as that seems, which is why my sister on the chestnut horse had to fit between them). Her horse took advantage of that and kicked out (and nearly took out the judge!) and then semi-bolted. She stood in the middle of the ring for the rest of the class. She went back to showing her old gelding at the rest of the open shows and her mom is selling this horse (since they need a new one to replace the old one, who is definitely showing his age, and only want one horse to share) and the last time I saw them they were trying out another one that has been there and done that. DO NOT CRITICIZE. First, the girl will not see your comments, so they won't help her. Yes, she made mistakes, but she was nervous (we've all been there!) and the horse was green. Stuff happens. After this, she realized it was just too much horse for her and made the right decision to quit showing him. Maybe her reaction to his behavior wasn't the greatest, but I'm sure she wasn't thinking straight. Positive or neutral comments are welcome.

Oct 6, 2008 - Oh OkayLooked like a show ring in VA. xD

Oct 7, 2008 - the white horse and rider was the only smart one by circling and getting away from hte crazy horse that's what it was doing.......

jumpthemoon15 Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - That wasn't what she was doing. In some show circuits (such as h/j and IHSA), it's encouraged to circle/cut across the ring to avoid jams. In others, including 4-H and AQHA, it's penalized--no matter how many horses are in front of you. Sounds crazy, I know, but it's true. That rider just doesn't show those circuits (and was obviously new to 4-H) and didn't know that. In fact, she nearly caused another wreck because she cut in front of the chestnut horse.

Oct 8, 2008 - ok.. the ridder on the white horse had full Control of it.. i dont see what the big deal was i mean she was just getting some space between her and the other horses..drr.. and the the black horse only kicked because the horse behind it was right up its ass... i dont see what the big deal is....

jumpthemoon15 Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - No one said the rider on the white horse was out of control. However, she was not supposed to cut across the ring--at AQHA and AQHA-judged shows, that is not customary and will be penalized. As for the black horse kicking, a kick like that (which endangered the other horse and the judge) is considered a major disobedience, regardless of how close any other horse was. After all, it's inevitable that other horses will be close at a show. He may not have fully bolted, but she was not in control.

peruvianlover549 Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - ok..i have showin the QH circut, you dont get points marked if you do that....and if you think the ridder was out of control then you really need to know to know the deffition of OUT OF CONTROL!

peruvianlover549 Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - do you like memorize the rule book b4 every show or sumthing????

jumpthemoon15 Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - While I do think it's a good idea for every rider to be familiar with the rulebook for his or her show circuit, breed organization, or discipline group (ex.: 4-H, AQHA, APHA, USEF, USDF, USHJA, local clubs, etc.), no, I don't. But I have been riding for 20 years and showing a lot of it, and I've shown at h/j, AQHA, AHA (Arab), 4-H, IHSA (intercollegiate), and other shows (from local to regional level and up)--there's differences and the way to do well is to learn them.

jumpthemoon15 Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - I've also shown the AQHA circuit and yes, they frown upon that. No, you won't have a pre-set number of points deducted, but the judge is going to notice and they do not appreciate it. I've worked for several excellent AQHA trainers, shown at several large QH shows, judged at national level youth judging competitions when I was younger, and discussed this with judges. Trust me, it's not customary.

jumpthemoon15 Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - As for her being out of control, she endangered herself, the other horse/rider, and the judge. That's not exactly controlled. Besides that, I know this rider and that horse personally; you don't. I also watched the entire class, not just this clip. Trust me, she did not have complete control. No, the horse never fully bolted or threw her, but there was a fairly high potential of it. Listen to it with volume--do you normally sound like that when you're in control? I didn't think so.

c140075 Says:

Oct 14, 2008 - Must've been embarrassing for her.

MacabreMikolaj Says:

Oct 25, 2008 - Poor girl. I'm assuming that was her shouting out his name in a panic? She sounded absolutely terrified. It really sucks the big one when parents push kids to ride these mounts when they're just not comfortable. Hope she continued to ride and didn't let it dishearten her completely!

LopingSlow Says:

Oct 26, 2008 - wasnt that bad ive seen worse

jumpthemoon15 Says:

Oct 26, 2008 - I think she was yelling "Stop." Definitely not a good way to actually make him stop, but she was definitely panicking :). She'd already had one bad experience on him, so she knew what was coming. She did keep riding! She went back to showing her old, dead broke gelding for a few shows and at the last open show we were at together, she was riding a new AQHA all-around gelding that her family was trying...this one was a "been-there-done-that" type and she seemed to be doing a lot better :).

jumpthemoon15 Says:

Oct 26, 2008 - I'm sure we all have (or experienced it!) but that doesn't change the fact that the horse did bolt :).

MacabreMikolaj Says:

Oct 26, 2008 - I'm really glad to hear that, she seems like a good rider and handled it well under the circumstances! To everyone else, shove it. We've ALWAYS seen worse, regardless of how bad a video is. Doesn't change the fear in the person as it's happening.

canteringaimlessly Says:

Nov 3, 2008 - That happened to me like 3 weeks ago, except it was alot worse. Me&Phantom went to a little schooling show, and in the flat class, he completly freaked! He's only 3, so when they asked for the canter we were cantering and then he got behind this fast little pony, and he started bucking, leaping, and trying to get in front of the pony. It was a complete mess! My trainer was like "how the heck did you stay on!" lmao. You can see him on my page :D Is your sisters horse the one that almost gotkicked

jumpthemoon15 Says:

Nov 3, 2008 - Sounds like a fun class! :P I had a few like that when my jumper was just a baby and we were doing flat classes. And yes, my sister is on the fat chestnut horse that was almost kicked (between the other horse and the judge).

canteringaimlessly Says:

Nov 3, 2008 - Thank god Dribbles didn't get kicked :/ That'd hurt! Luckily Phantom did get close to kicking anyone. At least that i know of.. haha.

harpo5690 Says:

Nov 3, 2008 - this somewhat happened to me when i was warming up. i girl had brought her green stallion and while he was making his rounds kicked out at my horse nearly missing it. thankfully the girl and her horse were escorted out of the grounds du eto too many complaints...crazy

crazy4Hhorseluver Says:

Nov 9, 2008 - First & foremost its NOT a Quarter Horse Show!!! Its 4H!!!!!! KIDS!!!!! Learning from their mistakes. If you wanted a Quarter Horse Show then that's were you should have gone!

jumpthemoon15 Says:

Nov 9, 2008 - Are you talking to me? It's my video so I'm assuming you are. And no, it's not a QH show, but the girl on the misbehaving horse does show AQHA--as do most of the riders in the class. The state I live in is a big QH area and the 4H kids usually do AQHA too. Also, even though it's 4-H level, it's judged by AQHA standards, so the same rules apply (like the cutting across the ring issue). We do go to plenty of QH shows--as does the rider on the black horse (with a different horse).

yaysmokey15 Says:

Nov 15, 2008 - woa.the judge came about an inch from being squashed.

battousaiblade Says:

Nov 17, 2008 - that was too close. props on the girl for getting control of the horse
